Buzzing with excitement, the audience anxiously awaited the phenomenal opening number of the World of Dance showcase that took place in our very own Agoura High School gym on Wednesday night, November 6th, 2024. World of Dance is an event put on by our dedicated and extremely talented dance team. Each team member randomly selects a dance style and is challenged to choreograph a dance routine showcasing their dancing abilities and highlighting their selected type of dance. One of the twists of this event, that makes it so much more fun to watch, is that the dancers must recruit other, non-dancing, students and meet with them to teach, perfect, and perform the routine. This event has become a beloved tradition in our Agoura community, as many people have lots of fun watching our dancers show their skills and our non-dancers try their best to keep up. All the profits made from this event, support our dance team throughout the year.
This year, there were eight different teams, all with different styles of dance, each evaluated by three esteemed judges. After the opening number, performed by all the dance team members, “The Hustlas” started the competition off with a bang. Clara Baretto and Riley Pimstone executed an incredible hip-hop duet. They received a whopping score of 25 out of 30, setting a high benchmark for the night. Next up was the “Pure Power of Three”, performing a jazz trio. The trio, led by Delilah Chirckick and Sophia Sommer and joined by Sean Koppenhaver got 23. Following the amazing trio, was the group of the “Disco Divas”. This high-energy disco group was led by Ava O’Keefe, Makena Shain, and Madi Dianaty who recruited Cal Meyer, Maya Yashar, Maneli Darabnia, Cole Driscoll, Connor Bole, Aidan Yamauchi, and Cash Jobbins. The group scored a stupendous 25. Closing off the second half was the “Prima Ballerinas” with their ballet dance. Choreographed by Havyn Appling, Lila Willis, and Lily Yang who were accompanied by Jacob Gelb, Stella Lee, Amy Luther, Aiden Marciano, James Spraug, Ryan Robinson, and Max Micucci the ballet group received a 19. The first half ended with a performance by the kids who attended the dance team’s kids clinic a few weeks prior.
The second half of the event was thrilling, with even more styles, moves, and hardworking dancers . The team “Pom Queens” kicked off the half performing a high thrill pom dance. The team was led by Eden Videgain and Tigerlily Roy who were joined by Julien Videgain, Brielle Masrour, Cecilia Diamond, and Anastasia Fergason. This group had an incredible performance, and it was reflected in their extremely high score of 28. Following them, “Back to the Beat”, the quartet led by Kyra Senderov and Addison Weiss with their partners David Almog and Adam Moyal fired up the crowd. Their “Boys are Back” musical theater dance received a perfect score of 30. Following the perfect performance was the group “Wild N’ Western”. Just like their name, their dance was wild and their moves were western. The group was led by Nyla Arzu, Evie Videgain, Sera Collis, and Zoe Winkleman. They recruited some top tier non dancers including Eva Maynard, Mason Arzu, Natalie Karnak, Annalise Fung, Addie Hare, and Molly Murphy. This group had an exquisite dynamic and their flips and partner work earned them a 28. Following that incredible act was the lyrical quartet called “”. The team was led by Zoe Lind and Maya Moses, who were joined by Josh Tiano and Luke Reiss. Their beautiful choreography moved the audience and they finished with a score of 23. The final competitive performance of the night was given by “Hips Might Lie” and we can confidently say their hips did not lie. The dance was choreographed by the group’s leaders Sonia Dutta and Jadi Goldstein who recruited their team consisting of Michelle Kusuma, Matthew Gelb, Ahmad Razaqi, and Elan Sarid. They put on a spectacular finale and were clearly a fan favorite, which was reflected in their perfect score of 30.
In the end, after a high-energy finale, the winners were announced, and a very well-deserved victory went to the group Hips Might Lie. Overall, this event was a huge success, bringing lots of entertainment and a fun way to join the community.
