Agoura High School Peer Tutoring Program

Attention students of Agoura High School!

High school is undeniably difficult, and starting off second semester, it’s more crucial than ever to lock down academics. AHS offers a unique service to students looking for extra support; Peer Tutoring! Students with experience in all subject areas offer free tutoring lessons. This service provides students with an opportunity to study and learn in a lower stress environment. Rather than working with teachers, students seeking aid can learn from the teaching styles and perspectives of their fellow students.

History of the Program:

Originally, national societies such as the Math Honors Society and Science Honors Society tutored students at Agoura as part of separate school clubs. Since then, the Peer Tutoring Club has taken over to offer tutoring on all subjects. Dedicated tutors will possibly be awarded the NHS distinction (National Honors Society) for school culture participation and volunteering. However, the board is still working to secure the entry requirements to start this society at Agoura!

Student testimonies:

Students entering the center (C1) in the morning will sign-in using 5-star. Students looking for tutoring tell Ms. Inglis at the front desk, who will find a tutor in the room who can help. Every Thursday and Friday, students gather in the center to study individually, in groups, and with tutors. Junior Annalise Fung notes how she “can get different inputs on learning a subject and can get a better understanding of the material” when working with tutors. Dheekshaw Gopinath comments on the environment, calling it “calming” and “productive”. “I enjoy seeing other people being studious”.

How to join:

If you are a student interested in joining Peer Tutoring as a tutor, keep an eye out during the next Club Rush! Participation in Peer Tutoring has several benefits for students. You can:

  • Build bonds with students of all grade levels
  • Gain a deeper understanding of subjects tutored
  • Retain information from past years
  • Earn volunteering hours
  • Consider leadership opportunities

As Secretary of Peer Tutoring, you can also contact me directly if you are looking to join (gracehenne4508@student.lvusd.org).

Personal input:

I joined Peer Tutoring as a sophomore last year because I love the environment and I understand how students can benefit from a change in perspective. As a student myself, I realized that I was actually well equipped to teach others because I could anticipate the questions they might ask. Because I clearly remembered where I struggled with this mathematics concept, or that chemistry reaction sequence, I could actually share my own learning process. Additionally, it benefits me in my personal growth because I’ve learned to look at the learning process itself differently. Instead of learning simply to retain information, I’ve begun learning so I can explain it back to others.

For example, I tutored chemistry a lot last year while I was taking the class myself. I noticed myself engaging more in the lessons once I joined PT because I began thinking of how I would teach this concept; What analogies would I use? How would I lay out the process? I started organizing my thoughts better and took clearer notes so I could reference them while tutoring. In conclusion, involvement in Peer Tutoring, besides being generally fulfilling, has personal benefits as well.
