The Start of the Swim Season

As the swim season begins, athletes and coaches look forward to another round of rigorous training, exhilarating competitions, and personal achievements. Both returning and new swimmers are eager and prepared to establish goals, enhance their techniques, and build endurance. The season officially began on Monday, February 3, and will conclude on Friday, May 2. To prepare for upcoming meets, team members work diligently during two-hour practices throughout the week. Their next meet is scheduled for Friday, March 14, against Newbury Park high school.

There are many new swimmers on the team, the majority of whom are ninth-grade students. These newcomers are not only new to the team but some also new to the sport itself. Many of the swimmers are also members of the Agoura Water Polo team, and the swim practices help them maintain their fitness during the off-season. Additionally, there are swimmers who are currently not fellows of the water polo team but have been members of the swim team in previous years.

The swimmers focus on individual goals such as improving stamina, speed, and technique. Eloise Smith, a new swimmer, shared her goal: “My personal goal is to become faster and enhance my technique in breaststroke.”

However, swimming is not solely about individual success; improving as a team is equally important. Coaches focus on enhancing technique and endurance with drills to ensure the entire team can thrive. When asked about the primary goal of practices, Coach Biondi explained, “Physically, all the swimmers need to achieve better body positioning in the water and improve their technique.”

Beyond physical performance, mental sharpness is also a crucial component. Coach Biondi pointed out areas where Agoura’s swimmers can improve, stating: “Knowing what the set is, including when to start, how many repetitions they have completed, and how many are remaining. It is essential to be a thinker in the pool rather than merely a follower,” are all important aspects of this sport.

Being a part of the swim team isn’t only about training–it’s also about connecting with teammates. Whether bonding over favorite strokes and drills or simply by sharing a lane, the students form long-lasting friendships. A new swimmer, Kristiana, remarked, “I’ve made so many friends through swimming. Every day, I meet someone new in our large team.” A supportive and positive team environment can motivate swimmers to surpass their limits and significantly enhance their performance.

The swim season can be demanding due to rigorous training schedules, so staying motivated is key. Team members will celebrate small victories, maintain a positive mindset, and remind themselves of their love for the sport. Eloise Smith also mentioned that one of her recent small accomplishments was: “I learned how to flip turn and maintain my stamina.”

As the swim season progresses, Agoura’s swimmers will continue to challenge themselves and cherish the time spent with their teammates. With dedication, perseverance, and a strong team dynamic, they will make this a season to remember.
